Osamil – NYC’s modern and upscale Korean gastropub

You’ll find Osamil in New York City’s Koreatown on 5 W 31st ST New York, NY 10001. As no stranger to Ktown, I’m surprised that it has taken me this long to try out this restaurant.

The meal started off a delicious and crunchy note with the squid fries flavored with soy wasabi mayo dip and vinegar gochujang. I’m a sucker for anything lemon. After sprinkling a bit of lemon juice, the squid fries were even more delicious.

The most surprising dish was the beef tartare. We drizzled the quail egg yolk onto the rest of the dish and mixed the ingredients. I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I last had beef tartare in France and distinctively remember not enjoying it. However, Osamil’s beef tartare was truly surprising with its gochujang flavor infused with pine nuts and Korean pear. Dare I say that I found a beef tartare that I enjoy?

Next were the soy and garlic double-fried chicken wings. Upon the first bite into the juicy and tender meat, steam emitted from the freshly cooked wings. The flavor of the sauce coating the chicken wings was absolutely pleasant to the taste buds.

Lastly, the pork shank was a wonderful dish that is great for sharing with a larger group of people. It was well cooked and incredibly generous in its portion. It comes with lettuce leaves, which you can wrap the meat in. Side dishes also accompany the pork shank, with spicy radish kimchi, perilla-apple salad, pickled radish, and jalapeño & onion.

All the dishes were delicious. This is rare as I find that there is usually a small subset of dishes that impress amongst more mediocre dishes at a restaurant. However, Osamil truly delivered its culinary prowess as all four dishes were delightful.  If I had to rank the dishes they would be as follows: Soy and garlic chicken wings, Pork shank, squid fries, and lastly the beef tartare.

Also memorable was the service! The staff was stationed at the outdoor seating area at all times and remained attentive throughout our dining experience. Our food arrived at lightning speed.

Overall, I enjoyed dining here – the food, service, and atmosphere were all wonderful! I can’t wait to come back!
